Welcome to Adventures in Stop Motion!

Richard & Dan.

First steps…

Hello and welcome to my blog about my adventures in stop motion animation.

Stop motion is something that is new to me, and this blog will follow my journey making very simple animations with the help of my two sons, Daniel & James and my wife, Michele. I hope you find it interesting and informative – please feel free to let me know your thoughts – it would be great to have your feedback..

Stop motion animation ( is something that I’ve been interested in for a long time, but I’ve always thought that it was difficult to get started without spending a lot of money on fancy cameras and equipment.

StopMotionStudioThat was until I discovered a free app for my ipod touch/iphone called ‘Stop motion studio’ – suddenly everything became much simpler!

If you’re interested in stop-motion, this app is worth buying an ipod touch for if you don’t have one!

The next thing you need is a tripod.. There are two ways to do this – you can buy one or you make one from stuff lying around you house. In my case, this was a stiff cardboard tube that I cut a slot in to to hold the iPod! Use your imagination, there will definitely something in your kitchen or garage that will work just fine.

Ok, you have an iPod and a tripod. You’re ready to start! Now all you need is something to animate. I started with a lego castle with a few soldiers, etc which worked well for the first few videos.

I soon moved on to modelling clay ) and made a few simple morph like creations.Modelling Clay

But you don’t lego or modelling clay – you can use absolutely anything lying in around the house, for instance chocolate santas!

Even Nick Park had to start somewhere!!

The main thing you need is imagination – if you don’t have a story to tell, you’ll soon get bored.. Remember that it only needs to be a story that lasts 10 seconds or more and can involve anything you have lying around so it’s not too hard to get started.

By the way, two other things that I did buy are this book:

By the way, you can click on any of the pictures in my blog to buy the products or find out more information.

and a bendy necked LED table lamp from Ikea (

Neither of these are essential, but I’ve found them both useful and I would recommend them if you enjoy making your first few videos and decide to carry on..

Happy animating! :0)

All the best, Richard.
